Biomass Consultancy
Rising prices of fossil fuels and the government's Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) programme make wood biomass a very attractive fuel option, especially for areas not connected to the gas grid.
At the Centre for Alternative Technology we have almost 40 years of experience with a wide range of biomass technologies, and our consultants can help you find the solutions that work best for you and for the environment.
Typically, a feasibility study for a biomass system will include the following steps:

Heat demand calculationsUsing heat loss models or existing fuel bills as well as temperature records, our consultants can calculate the amount of heat energy required over the course of a year and the peak heat demands on the coldest winter days. |

Boiler SizingBased on heat loss and temperature data, the optimal biomass boiler size can be determined. Accurate boiler sizing is crucial - an oversized system means higher capital costs and lower efficiencies on days with lower heat loads, whereas an undersized system will not provide enough heat on the coldest days. |

Fuel options and economic analysisPellets, chips or logs? The choice of the right type of biomass fuel is a critical decision. Typically, the choice will be influenced by availability, cost and storage requirements as well as by the desired level of convenience. Our consultants will analyse the feasibility of different options and their financial implications, including payments through Renewable Heat Incentive and similar schemes, and will suggest the most attractive options. |
